What does SAP modernization and migration involve?

SAP modernization and migration is the structured process of assessing a current SAP or legacy landscape, deciding on a target state (typically S/4HANA), and then moving configuration, custom code, and data to that new environment. It generally follows an assess, cleanse, migrate, and validate sequence: understanding what exists today, improving data quality before it moves, executing the technical migration, and validating that processes and reports behave correctly before cutover. Done well, it reduces the risk of carrying forward years of accumulated customization and data quality issues into the new system.

Common Questions

A system conversion technically converts an existing SAP system to S/4HANA, carrying forward configuration, custom code, and historical data with targeted remediation. A new implementation rebuilds processes and configuration from the ground up on S/4HANA, which is often chosen when the current system carries too much legacy customization to be worth preserving.

Custom code is assessed against S/4HANA's simplified data model to identify what needs remediation, what is no longer needed, and what should be redesigned. Where possible, we favor moving custom logic off the core and onto SAP BTP as side-by-side extensions rather than re-embedding it in the new core.

Data migration follows an assess, cleanse, migrate, and validate sequence. We identify which master and transactional data needs to move, address quality issues before migration rather than after, run the technical migration, and then validate results against source data and business processes before cutover.

Cutover planning accounts for sequencing across company codes, integration points, and dependent systems, with defined fallback points and validation checkpoints. The goal is a cutover plan the business has reviewed and rehearsed, not one that is assembled at the last minute.
